Celebrate St. Patty’s Day at the Airport with Art, Workshops, Music & Food
Santa Monica, CA – February 27, 2012 – On Saturday March 17, 2012 from 12-5pm the City of Santa Monica Airport and Cultural Affairs Divisions, and participating tenants, invite you to explore open studios, watch artful demonstrations, try your hand at an art workshop, and enjoy live Irish jigs and food trucks in a unique, creative atmosphere. One of LA County’s oldest operating airfields, Santa Monica Airport has a rich background as the former home of the Douglas Aircraft Company and the birthplace of the DC-3. The airport has developed over time into an arts incubator, and is home to a number of creative venues housed in converted airplane hangars.
More than 60 local artists and performers will have their private studios and works on view. Painting, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media will be represented and many artists will be selling work from their studios as well as offering refreshments. Santa Monica Art Studios hosts a Silent Auction of original 6”x8” artworks by studio artists with bids starting at $75 and the Studio’s ARENA 1 Gallery, presents the exhibit BREAKING IN TWO: PROVACATIVE VISIONS OF MOTHERHOOD, the first comprehensive exhibition of work by women artists who are mothers, where the work itself integrates the maternal experience, the relationship to the body, the child, the family, and the society at large. The Pacific Standard Time exhibit features a multi‐cultural group of four generations of nationally and internationally recognized artist‐mothers selected to represent the multi‐faceted and changing realities of motherhood. The exhibit includes painting, drawing, sculpture, collage and assemblage, installation, photography, film/video, poetry/writing and performance.
Santa Monica College Art Mentor Program features works from a select group of SMC Art Department Students that were invited to participate in this unique learning program, and Santa Monica College Ceramic Arts presents throwing as well as Raku firing demonstrations throughout the day.
The Ruskin Group Theatre performs highlights of its popular monthly offering L.A. Café Plays and offers theater and art workshops for children. Other hands on activities for children and adults include an airplane making workshop with airport artist Laraine Mestman, a terrarium workshop using recycled bottles and jars, and new this year is the ArtWalk Stamp Hunt, an exploration of the ArtWalk and airport. Get stamped at each of the five locations (listed on the ArtWalk brochure) then pick up a prize at the Info Booth! Cliff Wagner & The Old #7’s will be performing a lively mix of bluegrass, blues and country music along with some Irish jigs throughout the day. Local restaurants Typhoon and Spitfire Grill will be serving up delicious meals along with some green St. Patrick’s Day specials. Border Grill Food Truck will serve modern Mexican food and the Waffles de Liege truck will serve authentic sweet Liege waffles for dessert.
The Museum of Flying is now open and will offer tours every half hour between 1:30-4:30pm. The Museum features displays and interpretive exhibits on the history of flight and the development and growth of the aviation and aerospace industry in Southern California. The Museum focuses on the Douglas Aircraft Company and the history of the Santa Monica Airport. Today the Museum celebrates the 88th Anniversary of the First Flight Around The World that took off from this very Airport on March 17, 1924!
The ArtWalk is part of Buy Local Santa Monica Expo 2012, a free community event dedicated to showcasing local businesses and the importance of buying local.
