David Ornette Cherry was an acclaimed composer, pianist, and educator known for his innovative fusion of jazz, classical, African, and world music traditions. A recipient of the 2003 ASCAP–Chamber Music America Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music, Cherry has established a distinguished career defined by creative exploration and cross-cultural dialogue. From an early age, he was immersed in the pioneering work of his father, Don Cherry, and Ornette Coleman. He began performing professionally at the age of sixteen, touring and recording with his father. His compositions reflect a lifelong engagement with improvisation and global musical traditions, shaped by collaborations with leading artists in the jazz and avant-garde communities.
