Mary Stallings was born and raised in San Francisco’s Western Edition which was the epicenter for black music in the 30’s - 60’s. She started singing gospel at the age of seven. She later found her way to jazz, singing with her Uncle Orlando Stallings’ big band at twelve. That gave her recognition in the city, making her a sought after talent in the Bay Area. As a child performer, she was groomed by many big band leaders of the era.
