Great Women Pianists: Aretha Franklin with Jennifer Jolly at California Jazz Conservatory

This first offering in a new workshop series taught by Jazzschool instructor Jennifer Jolly celebrates the masterful piano playing of the great Aretha Franklin. Her roots in the church, the influence of Ray Charles, and her brilliant self-accompaniment will be examined through playing transcribed excerpts, listening, and viewing. Handouts will include transcriptions, listening guides, and suggestions for further study. Prerequisites: basic piano proficiency and reading, familiarity with major and minor chords.
