Berkeley's own jazz orchestra features the compositions of Harold Land, orchestrated for large ensemble by lone arranger Tony Corman. Harold Land is best known as a ferocious bebop tenor player and charter member of the Clifford Brown quintet, but in mid career he transformed himself into a Trane-influenced modernist, contributing a wonderful suite of compositions ranging from driving modal music to pastel impressionism. The Morchestra plays big band jazz filtered through the half-vast midden that is the brain of guitarist/arranger/composer Tony Corman, a mid-century East Coaster transposed to the Bay Area. The members are Top Bay Area players, and the repertoire features fresh takes on familiar tunes, Brazilian gems, and original music.
