Music Against Malaria at The Back Room

Music Against Malaria is a benefit concert organized by Oakland Tech High School student saxophonist and clarinetist Nathan Nakadegawa-Lee, who has been awarded two Outstanding Soloist Awards at the Reno Jazz Festival.

He is joined by five other Oakland Tech High School students:
- Railey Stern-Yen, saxophonist and clarinetist with an Outstanding Soloist Award at the Reno Jazz Festival.
- Satchel Birch, former Oakland School for the Arts guitarist. He has performed for the San Francisco school board and also has an Outstanding Soloist Award from the Reno Jazz Festival.
- Mary Nguyen, pianist, has performed in various venues around the Bay Area and has two Outstanding Soloist Awards from the Reno Jazz Festival....

- Nick Reeves, classically trained cellist and jazz bassist, has performed at the White House with his string quartet The Perfect Fourth.
- Gus Hurteau (not shown above), Oakland School for the Arts percussionist and vibraphonist, has performed at Davies Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, and received the 2014 Downbeat Award for Outstanding Young Soloist.

100% of the proceeds from this performance will be donated to the Against Malaria Foundation. The Back Room is also donating half of its share. The Against Malaria Foundation is an NGO (non-Government organization) that uses all of its funding to purchase and supply anti-malaria nets in countries in Africa and South Asia that are devastated by the potentially lethal disease. It relies completely on donations and sponsors.

Tickets are $10 and are available in advance at the link below, or at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby).

The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own adult beverage with no additional corkage fee.
