"Following Pusaka Sunda's return from their 30th Anniversary Tour to West Java, the group will present a concert of Gamelan Degung music featuring master bamboo flute musician, Burhan Sukarma. The concert will include gamelan music from the tour, original degung compositions by Burhan Sukarma, vocal arrangements, and a kacapi suling trio. The CJC continues to be one of Pusaka Sunda's favorite venues. In the 1970s and 1980s, Burhan Sukarma set a new standard for suling playing with frequent performances with RRI Bandung and on countless cassettes produced by the Hidayat, MTR and Jugala labels. After moving to the US in 1986, Burhan transformed his art to fit a new context. He performed all over the United States and Canada with a cross-section of American musicians. His accomplishments include appearances at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, solo improvised suling concerts for CNMAT (Center for New Music and Technology) in Berkeley, appearances with the Evergreen Club in Toronto and the University of Pittsburg gamelan, as well as teaching Sundanese music to Americans at the University of Washington, San Jose State University, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, as well as privately in his San Jose studio. In 1988, Burhan founded Pusaka Sunda, a gamelan group composed of American musicians, to provide a voice for Burhan's own compositions as well as a means for promulgating traditional Sundanese degung music in the US. In choosing the name “Pusaka Sunda,” Burhan stressed the connection of the group and the music it plays to his own Sundanese heritage, and emphasized his belief that the group represents the inevitable flowering of Sundanese art which, despite the American heritage of many of its members, is nevertheless ""khas Sunda.” With Pusaka Sunda, Burhan has produced three CDs of traditional, arranged, and original music. Burhan and Pusaka Sunda have performed all over the United States, including at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, and have received grants from the California Arts Council and Santa Clara County in support of Burhan’s compositional activities....
