In this workshop, you will learn about the traditional roles of the pianist-accompanist and vocalist in the duo setting, as well as what it means to collaborate together as a unit. This workshop is geared toward both pianists and guitarists. Participants will have opportunities to practice and workshop songs with vocalist Danielle Wertz while receiving coaching from both Wertz and Shapiro. Please bring two jazz standards that you are familiar with. If possible, pianists/guitarists should memorize the chord progressions and melodies ahead of time. Participants will leave this class having a better understanding of what it means to play together as a duo.Miami-based pianist,ÊJake ShapiroÊwas a Semi-Finalist in the 2018 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. He is a Finalist in the upcoming 2019 Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition. Jake is a Teaching Assistant at the Frost School of Music pursuing his DMA in jazz piano performance.Berkeley-based vocalist,ÊDanielle WertzÊwas a Semi-Finalist in the 2015 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition. She frequently plays at local venues including the Black Cat and Red Poppy Art House, as well as larger-scale national venues including Blues Alley in Washington, DC.
