Toronto-based saxophonist Allison Au leads her quartet in an open rehearsal of a new composition. It’s easy for composers to become attached to the idea of their own compositions, but it can be of great benefit to be open to suggestions from other band members, whether it be changing a groove, bass line, comping pattern, or perhaps even cutting a section of the tune altogether. The members of Allison’s group will share their approach to this process, which has helped lead to group cohesiveness and acclaim on the Canadian jazz scene. Open to all.
