ivy room presentsTHURSDAY OCTOBER 17THâWATERSTRIDERSUZANIMALGIRL SWALLOWS NIGHTINGALEâDoors 7:00pm / Show 7:30pm$15 Advance / $18 Day of ShowâIVY ROOM860 San Pablo Ave, Albany ⢠21+(rsvp on facebook)WATERSTRIDERâWaterstrider, captivating because of its apparent defiance of our worldâs physical laws, is a fitting stage name for Nate Salman. Salman creates music as therapeutic self-exploration, seeking to find true self in spite of our worldâs supposed rules and rigid constructs. On this new collection of songs, the Sublimate EP, Waterstrider turns loneliness, heartbreak, hope, and rebirth into thick and often psychedelic layers of sound. Inspired by musical auteurs like BjĂśrk, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Bat for Lashes, and Moses Sumney, Waterstrider moves fluidly through genres to find lush sonic landscapes.Following 2019âs Way Out, Waterstriderâs Nate Salman went through a period of joyous re-awakening, surrounded by a community of close-knit friends and collaborators. Finding new joy and power in an exploration of gender and sexual fluidity, Salman began to hone in on recordings that remained unfinished from previous sessions with producers St. Francis Hotel. Fueled by a sense of deep connection to the collective unconscious and other living beings, Salman dived deep into writing new material. As the pandemic hit the world, he was forced inward. Passing recordings back and forth via email, Salman was able to finish the songs with help and motivation from collaborators St. Francis Hotel (production), Walker Johnson (drums), and Luke Bace (bass). In these songs, we find Waterstrider transforming disconnection and despair into feelings of hope and love. We see someone who is deep in contemplation but also satisfied with where they have washed ashore. Quite literally sublimating darkness into light, Waterstrider finds that even in the most torturous moments of death and despair, âall we haveis love.â SUZANIMALâSuzanimal is a smart, playful psychedelic pop/rock project from San Francisco Bay Area singer, songwriter and bassist Suzanne Galal. Inspired by her love of Talking Heads and the Tom Tom Club. Galal â a scientist and pharmacy professor by day â picked up a bass guitar for the first time at the age of 30, and began writing confident, groove-centered tracks soon after. With Galalâs seductive yet light-as-air vocals, lyrics driven by her curiosity about the human mind, and a rotating cast of veteran backing musicians, the band quickly earned a reputation for engaging live performances and genre-defying style. A Suzanimal show is designed to make you lose yourself to the rhythm â with just enough of the unexpected to keep you on your toes âtil the afterparty.Suzanimal released their debut EP, Body, recorded at San Franciscoâs legendary Hyde Street Studios. It was described by KQED as, "subtle, evocative and precise â swings with an attitude thatâs breezy yet grounded." Passing, just released in September of 2022, is the first full-length from Suzanimal. Written over a period that included the birth of Galalâs son, her first year of parenthood, and the beginning of a global pandemic, the album expands on the funky, danceable sounds she introduced with her debut EP, Body. Featuring more experimental, sophisticated arrangements and lush production that makes each track feel both intimate and spacious. Passing finds Galal considering the ways of the universe and the plight of the household spider; crafting long-distance love songs and deeply felt lullabies; and making peace with coexisting joy and grief during a uniquely strange moment in time. The song âEelâ was recently featured in KQEDâs Pass the Aux. (KQED)GIRL SWALLOWS NIGHTINGALEâGirl Swallows Nightingale is the definition of seamless fusion, combining traditional jazz improvisation, synth wave, dream pop, drum and bass, dance, and precise, experimental vocals. GSN is composed of musicians who are flexible and adventurous â led by Marica Petrey, the wizard behind the song compositions and the ethereal vocals. The Oakland-based artist's live performance delivers a big, cinematic sound while taking lyrical and visual inspiration from things as varied as anime, video games, fantasy, science fiction and folklore. GSN is nearing completion of her second LP, Chrysanthemum, and her newest single ç âHonĹâ is featured as the credits song in the upcoming movie, "Owl," (2025) which is currently making its festival rounds. GSN recently debuted her solo set in Japan.
