Harvey Wainapel cd Release: Amigos Brasileiros Vol. 2 at California Jazz Conservatory

Since 2000, saxophonist and clarinetist Harvey Wainapel has been spending 2-4 months per year in Brazil. The fruits of his travels, research and encounters can be found on his newest release, the long-awaited follow-up to Amigos Brasileiros. While respecting tradition, some of Brazil’s greatest composers show how Brazilian folkloric tradition is always evolving. While respecting tradition, some of Brazil’s greatest composers show how Brazilian folkloric tradition is always evolving. Harvey’s group includes two very special Brazilian guests, pianist Vitor Gonçalves (Hermeto Pascoal, Maria Bethânia, Anat Cohen) and drummer Cleber Almeida (Banda Mantiqueira, Hamilton de Holanda). Wainapel, besides his extensive jazz background, has been deeply involved in the music of Brazil for many years. He has toured with Airto Moreira/Flora Purim, Jovino Santos Neto, and performed and recorded with many of Brazil’s other greats including Guinga, Nelson Ayres, Filó Machado and Marcio Bahia. Rio de Janeiro’s O Globo newspaper reviewing a concert in duo with guitar virtuoso Paulo Bellinati said “Wainapel displayed incredible intimacy with the language of Brazilian music and great stage presence.” Brazilian icon Ivan Lins says, “Harvey understands Brazilian music in a way that’s very unusual; he’s got the spirit, he’s a great musician!” harvjazz.com
