Peter Cuschieri, Mgr., Angelica's Concert Venue THE HOUSE OF PAYNE: Clif is the son of James "Buddy" Payne, reedsman with the Lionel Hampton, Lucky Millinder and Fletcher Henderson bands of the Harlem Renaissance, 1920s-1950s. Clif's mother, Aline, educated by Tuskegee legendries James Weldon Johnson and William Dawson, was an ensemble vocalist who once backed Nat ìKingî Cole. WEST COAST PAYNE: Clif's musical ascent began when Bobby McFerrin featured Clif as a special guest vocalist in San Francisco. Since then, Clif has performed at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, Yoshi's, West Hollywood's Troubadour and LA's Jazz Bakery. He's opened for Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, Dionne Warwick and has performed with Tower of Power. His recordings include commercials & cds by Dave Koz and jazz fushionists Hiroshima. His mastery of lyrics, interpretation, improvisation, phrasing and tone highlight the technical aspects of his voice without sacrificing its emotional depth--all while taking us on melodic excursions of artistic expression. "SAANG, PAYNE!" . . . is what folks shouted back-in-the-day when the teen-aged Clif was a featured vocalist in his church choir. ìBRING ON THE PAYNE!î . . . is how he's introduced these days.

DENNY BERTHIAUME,
piano, grew up outside Washington D.C. and Chicago. He is the only non-California native in the group although San Francisco is his home. He has performed with Bobby McFerrin, Diane Schuur, Joe Williams, Ed Thigpen, Stan Getz, k.d.lang, and Joan Rivers. He recorded 4 albums as co-leader of the successful fusion group Solar Plexus. He has appeared at jazz festivals in Monterey, the Russian River, San Jose, and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He was professor in literature and music at Foothill College in Los Altos, California (1970-2004) and a published playwright.
