Sharman Duran Bio
Jazz that will make you want to move.
A voice at once intelligent, sophisticated and soulful, every note placed with deliberate aim, hitting its mark with unerring accuracy.
Original songs that touch your emotional core.
These are some of the ways listeners and fellow musicians have described the music of San
Francisco jazz vocalist/pianist/songwriter Sharman Duran. As a vocalist, Sharman Duran stands out as a talented musician who values both the lyric and the melodic attributes of a song.
As a songwriter and lyricist herself, she knows how to deliver the work of a fine songwriter with the respect and precision it deserves, always drawing in her listener. And as a musician, she's dedicated to playing music that has an unmistakable pocket.
Her latest recording, the single, "Post Apocalyptic Subterranean Paradise" (lyrics by Sharman
Duran, music by Aaron Germain) describes a world after global warming where people live comfortably in underground cities and the ruined earth is just one big vacation destination.
Her 2009 CD "Future Echo" features five of her originals, including the title song, Duran's musical setting of a poem by the late child poet Mattie J.T. Stepanek. The album is rounded out by five compositions of several of her favorite songwriters.
She is also included in the compilation CD's "Quintessential" and "And A Songbird In A PeartreeÖSix Songs of Christmas"
Based in San Francisco, Duran is a staple of local jazz venues (Top o' the Mark, Cafe Divine,
Rasselas, People In Plazas concert series, et al.) where she leads her own trio, playing her originals plus music by such composers as Stevie Wonder, George Duke and Chick Corea and selections from the Great American Songbook.
A sought-after teacher for over 20 years, Sharman Duran is on staff at Blue Bear School of Music, Jazz Camp West and Circle of Friends Preschool, where she has designed an Orff-Schulwerk based music curriculum especially for 3- to 5-year-olds.
