Suzanna Smith is known for her golden tone, innate sense of swing and irresistible charm. She brings classic jazz standards to life but has original compositions and new lyrics penned to traditional instrumental jazz songs too, and they are the heart of her most intriguing performances.
Born in Boulder, CO and raised in Livermore, CA, Suzanna was eager to sing even as a child, “to the point my parents were telling me to be quiet in the back of the car.”
With a background in a cappella singing, she pursued vocal studies at the Jazzschool in Berkeley where she worked closely with vocalists Laurie Antonioli and Madeline Eastman. She also studied privately with Kitty Margolis, resulting in a unique mentoring relationship between the two vocalists.
Margolis is listed as a co-producer on Suzanna’s debut album Halfway Between Heaven & Love. In addition to her sage treatments of standards, the album showcases her talent for crafting successful original compositions and new lyrics to instrumental songs. Suzanna also leads The Peggy Lee Project, inspired by the fellow jazz singer-songwriter’s prolific repertoire of original material.
Suzanna has been featured three times on KCSM's 'In The Moment,' she founded and led an open mic at Savanna Jazz in San Francisco for several years and she is a creative force behind The Sound Room in Oakland. Past appearances include The Mendocino Music Festival, The Rrazz Room, The Jazzschool, The Sound Room, The Freight & Salvage, Savanna Jazz, Anna's Jazz Island and Kelly's of Alameda, among others. Catch her and see for yourself how she’s illuminating today's vibrant, vocal jazz scene.
