Darren Johnston Quintet Ft. Myra Melford at Community Music Center

In collaboration with Yerba Buena Center for the Art's 'New Frequencies Fest', Jazz in the Neighborhood is proud to present Darren Johnston's Wind Over Walls Quintet featuring Myra Melford. The trio of Darren Johnston, Matt Szemela and Doug Stuart has played extensively together over the last two years, embedded into the pan-stylist “new roots” ensemble Broken Shadows, as well as in the Darren Johnston Trio + 1 residency with the Oakland Freedom Jazz Society. This concert will feature the trio for the first time with the greatly renowned pianist and composer Myra Melford, and with Hamir Atwal, a much sought after and highly creative Bay Area drummer. They will be playing original chamber jazz pieces that allow for these unique individual’s voices to be heard. A musical style that is at times intimate, while other times more extraverted, from expansive clouds of sound, to heavy grooves, melodies both intricate and almost familiar, the constants will be an exciting ensemble that listens deeply, prizes spontaneity above all else, and can go just about anywhere.
