Born in Rio de Janeiro, Claudia Villela’s haunting improvisations and five-octave range have earned her a consistent following. Her music is influenced by everything from Brazilian baroque to bossa nova to free jazz. Arriving in California in 1984, Villela has since traveled and performed around the country. As San Francisco Examiner jazz critic Phil Elwood put it, “Villela actually dances with her voice on top of Brazilian beats.”
