Trumpeter Marquis Hill, winner of the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition and a regular headliner in Chicago, recently moved to New York to learn from a new scene. Hill’s music is soulful and well-composed, incorporating elements of Chicago and New York and sometimes R&B and hip-hop. With original compositions that boast memorable melodies, exciting solos, and a kinetic, irresistibly propulsive rhythm section, this quintet is an easy recommendation for classic jazz fans as well as anyone interested in the contemporary fusions increasingly being explored by young, genre-crossing composers.
