Paula Harris is best known for her passionate blues performances. She’s made a name in the genre with her multiple blues & music award nominations, airplay on more than 3,000 stations worldwide, a top 3 finish in the biggest “Battle of the Bands” competition on the planet, not to mention winning the Monterey Blues Festival’s Battle of the Bands.
Paula has also appeared at numerous festivals & events all over North America. Dan Aykroyd even selected her as his “Blues Breaker” & “Favorite New Release” for her debut album on his internationally syndicated radio show The “Blues Mobile”. So with such a prominent blues presence, many don't realize her roots are also firmly in Jazz.
For this show, Paula teams up with Nate Ginsberg & his acoustic trio to present a jazzy, bluesy & impudent show that pulls from the great American songbook, smooth jazz & provocative lyrics full of humor and double entendre.
They pull a surprisingly wide array of songs together which all represent the intersection of Jazz & Blues…with a heaping dose of soul on the side. It’s shocking, downright sexy & entertaining to be lulled by the elegant complexity of a beautiful jazz standard- then forced to laughter at the witty naughty lyrics from either Paula or some of the lesser-known “greats” of the 1940’s-60, like Dinah Washington & Helen Humes.
Nate & crew are ON FIRE, playing with passion& intensity as they shine in this new format! Nate Ginsberg has toured & recorded with legends like Herbie Hancock, Larry Graham, Dizzie Gillespie & Randy Newman. He crosses the genres of Jazz, Blues, R&B, Soul & Funk with ease & finesse. He takes piano playing to a jaw-dropping concert level. Derrick “D’Mar” Martin is not only the drummer for Paula’s award winning blues band “The Beasts of Blues”, but he’s also a driving force behind the fantastic energy& pulse of this show. Derrick played with Little Richard for 17 years & is not only one of the world’s best drummers (no exaggeration!) He is also a performer in his own right. He's known for jumping over the drums & taking the beat into the audience with glasses, tables, chairs & anything else available. In addition to Little Richard, Derrick has also played with a dizzying array of iconic musicians & continually floors his audiences. Rich Girard is a master of the Upright fretless bass. He's worked on Windham Hill records for acts as varied as the Talking Heads, Cleo Laine & Roy Rogers.
This band is NOT “side men” -- this is a trio of band leaders who have come together for an explosive musical result. Add Paula’s 4-octave powerhouse vocals, and it is an experience not to be missed!
The night is also a jam, so if you play an instrument or sing please let Paula or Nate know & they'll work you into the show. Remember to bring your instrument. Singers, if the tune is well known, just know your key. If the tune is not as well known, lead sheets or sheet music would be great! Nate knows a TON of music too, so you should be able to find something that works!
Enter the club thru the bar, pay the cover & pass thru the velvet curtain into the cozy lounge that transports you into a 1930s speakeasy! Dim lighting, small tables and vintage records line the walls. It's like passing back in time to the glory days of Jazz & Blues joints.
