Ashwin Batish: Application of Indian Music Concepts to Jazz and World Music
Local sitar and tabla player Ashwin Batish has been credited with the growing re-vitalization of a new genre of Indian music, “world beat raga rock.” He was trained in the North Indian classical tradition by his father the legendary Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish and later formed his own unique fusion of music based on the rich traditions of Indian, African, Middle Eastern, and other cultures, mixed with a Western beat taken from pop, rock and jazz. Ashwin will explain some of the intricacies of Indian music and how to apply this knowledge to jazz and world music. Joining Ashwin will be his son Keshav Batish on tabla, pakhavaj and drums; his sister Meena Batish on vocals, and Myron Dove on bass.
