Channeling infinite styles through the filter of modern jazz, Grammy–winning guitarist Bill Frisell has skillfully dodged pigeonholes along the way. His often subtle approach is shown to best advantage against the backdrop of a small group versed in the art of dynamics. Eyvind Kang (viola) and Rudy Royston (drums) are a perfect case in point. The trio first performed as such in 2008, and they’ve been since perfecting a suite of original compositions and striking reinterpretations that finally emerged from the studio last August. Beautiful Dreamers (Savoy Jazz, 2010) supplies the tender yet stirring repertoire for this certain to amaze live appearance.
