Vocalist Claudia Villela’s musical journey began in Rio de Janeiro. A graduate of the Brazilian Conservatory of Music, she arrived in California in 1984. Villela attended the Manhattan School of Music on scholarship, studying with Sheila Jordan, and was later taught by Ray Brown. Her astonishing five-octave vocal range, distinctive songwriting and flair for risk-taking improvisation have made her one of the most celebrated performers in the Bay Area, described by the late Phil Elwood as a singer who “dances with her voice on top of Brazilian Beats.” JazzTimes said of her 2005 CD Dreamtales (with Kenny Werner), “Alert!
