Dmitri Matheny is well-known for his melodic flugelhorn playing and intriguing compositional style. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny, “One of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.” His current Jazz Noir project highlights an amalgam of popular TV detective and spy movie themes spliced together with thoughtful, original compositions and a mix of hard bop and West Coast jazz classics. He is particularly at home on ballads where his lyrical, warm tone excels. Performing with Matheny is saxophonist Dave Ellis whose inventive solo style first gained attention with the original Charlie Hunter Trio.
