Long regarded as one of the greatest guitarists in jazz, Pat Martino has certainly had a remarkable journey. Born in Philadelphia and introduced to jazz through his father, Martino left school in the tenth grade to devote himself to music and played with Philly rockers such as Bobby Rydell and Frankie Avalon before moving to Harlem and embarking on a legendary career in jazz. After an aneurysm rendered him unable to recall any of his skills as a guitarist, he began to study of his own recordings to regain his abilities. On his new album, Nexus, it’s clear that few musicians play “in the moment” as much as Martino.
