The Bill Frisell 858 Quartet at Stanford Jazz Festival

Bill Frisell’s sound is instantly identifiable, yet defies description. Named for a series of paintings by Gerhard Richter, the 858 Quartet includes violinist and SJW alum Jenny Scheinman, violist Eyvind Kang, and cellist Hank Roberts. Together, they are likely to take improvisatory flights that touch on styles and idioms that are seemingly diverse and eclectic, but united by the vitality of their roots. The Observer describes him this way: “The brilliant . . . guitarist embraces a jazzy kind of post-rock . . . multi-textured, multi-hued . . . that never sees Frisell sacrifice his impeccable technique, or neglect the deep structure of his songs, but never sees him forget to have fun either.” Though Frisell has been turning the jazz world on its ear for more than 20 years, this is his first SJF appearance....
