Yosvany Terry Quartet at San Jose Jazz Summer Fest at Blackbird Tavern

Born in Camagüey, Cuba, Yosvany Terry Cabrera is one of the most acclaimed saxophonists on the jazz and contemporary music scene in New York. Having received a classical music education and graduate degree from the prestigious National School of Arts (ENA) in Havana, Terry went on studying composition, orchestration, counterpoint and theory at Julliard University and Mannes School of Music in New York. While in Cuba, Yosvany worked with Latin jazz giants Chucho Valdes, Silvio Rodriguez, Fito Paez and toured the world with the influential group Columna B.

Terry moved to New York in 1999 and was immediately recognized as a “spectacular talent,“ playing with Roy Hargrove, Steve Coleman, Eddie Palmieri, Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Ravi Coltrane, Meshell Ndgeocello, Cassandra Wilson, Israel Lopez “Cachao“, Paquito de Rivera, Taj Mahal, Omar Sosa and Dafnis Prieto (also appearing at this year’s Summer Fest)....

Always a student, Terry has absorbed and incorporated American jazz traditions with his own Afro-Cuban roots to produce compositions and solo work that range from the rhythmic and hard driving avante-garde to sweet sounding lyricism. His voice and style are unique and, as a bandleader, he has married the two to create a new and exciting sound.

Jazz+ Concerts give you the opportunity to see some of Summer Fest’s brightest stars a second time in intimate, acoustically-rich settings later the same day. Jazz+ performances take place at the San Jose Rep Theater, Blackbird Tavern, Theatre on San Pedro Square (site of the Swing Stage) and The Pagoda (site of the Jazz Beyond Stage) Friday-Sunday.
