“…evolving the Latin Big Band music of the past into a sizzling salsa sound of the future.” – All About Jazz
Founded five years ago, the Bay Area’s Pacific Mambo Orchestra (PMO) quickly established itself as the West Coast’s premiere Latin dance big band. They set the music world on fire earlier this year when their self-titled debut won the GRAMMY for Best Tropical Latin Album, beating out Marc Anthony. The dynamic 20-piece Latin Big Band features some of Northern California’s finest musicians, including band leaders Steffen Kuehn (trumpet) and Christian Tumalan (piano). PMO honors the sounds of the great Latin Big Bands of the 1940s through 1960s, including Machito, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, and many others and folds these rich traditions into their own intoxicating and original arrangements. With a repertoire of mostly original scores, the selections move in a frenetic pace, pulsing with the sounds, rhythms, and beats that only a true Big Band is capable of producing. The dance floor will be open for an incredible night of mambo at the the historic Coconut Grove Ballroom. Dance instructor Mario Avila sets the stage with a beginning Salsa dance lesson prior to the show. Mario has taught at the Palomar Ballroom since 1996 and specializes in Latin dances such as Salsa, Rumba, Cha Cha and Bolero....
