About

Possessing one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone tones in jazz, pioneering avant and free-jazz icon Pharoah Sanders got his start playing with Sun Ra, rose to fame in John Coltrane’s group and was given his stage name by Amiri Baraka. With that company, it’s only natural that he would rise to such cultural significance. His intense phrasing has become a touchstone of free-jazz. His collaborations with Coltrane were monumental and influential to both artists, and his classic 1960’s and 70’s albums have cultivated legions of followers worldwide. His current quartet features William Henderson on piano, Nat Reeves on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums.
