Known for a series of acclaimed albums exploring the music of his South Indian heritage through modern jazz, his new project pays tribute to Parker. “It’s easy to say that Bird influenced modern music without dissecting that notion” says Mahanthappa, and the new album Bird Calls seeks to demonstrate that.
