A longtime SJW faculty member, bassist Ruth Davies has serious credentials in blues and jazz. A short list of the artists she’s toured or recorded with includes John Lee Hooker, Charles Brown, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Maria Muldar, Jimmy Witherspoon, Clark Terry, and Elvin Bishop. Ruth’s Blues Night at the Stanford Jazz Festival has sold out nearly every year, thanks to her uncanny ability to put together backup bands that would be headliners in most situations. This year’s band is one of her best ever, featuring special guest Robben Ford on guitar, Ndugu Chancler on drums, Danny Caron on guitar, John R. Burr and Bennett Paster on keyboards, and Charles McNeal on sax. Robben’s been in the top five of everyone’s Best Guitarist list since he hit it big with the original Yellowjackets. His reputation has only increased with his subsequent work with Jimmy Witherspoon, Joni Mitchell, George Harrison, and Miles Davis. His most recent recordings have received rave reviews; Soul on 10 and Renegade Creation, both of which find him laying down deep grooves with some of the jazz colleagues he’s amassed over the course of his career. “If the blues were a Swiss watch,” says All About Jazz, “Robben Ford would be the watchmaker.”...
