Tom Catanzaro Feat Marshall Hawkins - A Tribute To Miles Davis at Diamond Valley Arts Center

On Saturday, January 11th at 6:00pm, the Diamond Valley Arts Council will hold an awards ceremony and dinner for the Fourth Annual Art For Youth participants. The program encourages young artist to publicly display their talents while helping to educate them how their work can be a viable economic creator. The experience of hanging in a public gallery helps build confidence and pride as well. This year the program is made possible by the generous donations of Mrs. Elena C. Kern with and in the memory of the late Dr. William Kern.

Following the Awards portion of the evening, the doors will open at 7:00pm to the public for the regularly scheduled Music At The Center evening. Tom Catanzaro features bassist Marshall Hawkins for a tribute to the music of the late Miles Davis. All Art For Youth participants and their families are welcomed to experience this one of a kind presentation free as a part of the program. Mr. Hawkins is possibly best known for being one of several bassists who took over from Ron Carter when the latter left Miles Davis' so-called Second Great Quintet. Hawkins played with Miles Davis, along with Herbie Hancock and drummer Tony Williams. More recently, Hawkins has been part of the West Coast version of the Harry Pickens Trio, featuring Louisville jazz pianist, with Harold Mason on drums. Hawkins later taught at the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts (ISOMATA), now Idyllwild Arts Academy, and currently is head of the Jazz Program.

Elena C. Kern has been an advocate for culture and the Arts in the Valley for many years. Not only is she a supporter, she is also an accomplished artist.

Among Elena’s many awards is The Art Alliance of Idyllwild's Artist of the Year for 2005 and 2006, and twenty-four first place ribbons. In addition, Elena's "California Gold", was chosen by California Senator Mike Morrell for inclusion into the 2015-2016 California Contemporary Art Collection exhibit at the State Capitol, where it was displayed for two years. "California Gold" can now be viewed at her gallery at: 123 N. Harvard Street Hemet, CA. Elena was also nominated for Senator Morrell’s 2015 Women of Distinction, in recognition of her community involvement with the Diamond Valley Arts Council and the revitalization of downtown Hemet. She lives in Hemet, California, with her Scottish Fold cat, Piper...who "helps" her paint! Elena's motto is: "It's never too late to become what you might have been..."
