Andy Clausen is a New York-based trombonist and composer, an avid explorer of cross-genre territory, drawing inspiration from folk music, jazz, classical, and indie rock. Andy Clausen is a New York-based trombonist and composer, an avid explorer of cross-genre territory, drawing inspiration from folk music, jazz, classical, and indie rock. Hailing from Seattle, Clausen was the recipient of the 2009 Gerald Wilson Award for Jazz Composition from the Monterey Jazz Festival; as well as The 2010 Emerging Artist of The Year Award, and the 2011 Alternative Jazz Group of the Year Award from the Earshot Jazz Festival. Arriving in New York City in the fall of 2010, Clausen began his studies at the Juilliard School, where he has worked with the likes of Curtis Fuller, Benny Golson, John Clayton, John Faddis, Joe Lovano and Wycliffe Gordon, and studied under Conrad Herwig, Steve Turre, Frank Kimbrough and Dr. Kendall Briggs. He has performed with new music mavericks Bill Frisell and Wayne Horvitz, pop sensation Feist and the avant-jazz saxophonist Andrew D’angelo. Clausen’s compositions have been performed by Wynton Marsalis and recorded by Cuong Vu.
