The Music Department at Cabrillo Middle School is directed by Mr. Mario Boccali, who brings together music-making and the academic learning of music in composition, performance, music history and music theory. The department offers a variety of ensembles for every student from those who have never played an instrument to those who enter the program with years of experience. Cabrillo Middle Schools jazz band has won many awards and consistently earns the highest rankings possible at Jazz Festivals from San Diego to San Francisco. Last year it earned Best in Parade and 1st place, Junior High Bands, at downtown Venturas St. Patricks Day Parade! The Music Department at Ventura High School is directed by Mr. Paul Hunt. Capitalizing on the great start our musicians receive at our middle schools, this nationally recognized program strives for excellence. Currently the program has over 12 different ensembles, including a symphony orchestra, 3 jazz ensembles, and marching band. The students regularly participate and earn distinction in state, regional, and national competitions. Recently, the Honor groups traveled to Chicago and Boston to participate in nationally adjudicated competitions. This spring they will be traveling to Nashville to participate in the Festival of Gold. The Ventura High School Jazz Bands have also garnered top awards at Festivals, and often feature musicians that continue their studies to become successful professional musicians. As with Cabrillos group, these students have a blast playing together, and are often asked to play at local events. Treat yourself to an amazing afternoon of free jazz musicyou will be entertained and inspired by these amazing student musicians! Both music programs are supported by the vibrant memberships of their Booster organizations, both 501(c)3 non-profits that strive to provide funds necessary to operate robust, goal-oriented public school music programs that serve all of its students. Their successful operation is 100% dependent on donations. Now is a great time to support the arts in our schools, as all music programs have struggled since COVID.
