Born in Tokyo, he began studying classical flute at age nine and began studying jazz in high school. During his college years, he performed as a backing band and studio musician for many famous singers before moving to the United States in 1980. He studied with Los Angeles Symphony principal flutist Janet Ferguson, James Newton, and Jim Walker, and has performed with numerous renowned musicians, including Ray Brown, Jean Harris, Sam Most, and Hubert Laws.
