His latest album, Burkina, was named one of the best recordings of 2016 by The Mercury News. Howell calls his sound “Bridge Music,” defining it as a unique jazz pathway that celebrates diversity, joins differences and links through a sonic connection.

Richard Howell calls the Bay Area home, but he’s been a leading light on the international scene for decades. A riveting improviser who is also a prolific producer and respected educator, he’s worked and recorded with leading figures in rock, pop, blues and jazz, from Etta James, Chaka Khan, Della Reese, Don Cherry, and Cecil Taylor to Charlie Haden, Willie Bobo, Pete Escovedo, Maurice White, Charlie Musselwhite and Carlos Santana.
