ivy room presentsTHURSDAY MARCH 14TH—IAN SANTILLANOAUGUST LEE STEVENSTHE SOAPBOX SALUTE—Doors 7:00pm / Show 7:30pm$12 Advance / $15 Door—IVY ROOM860 San Pablo Ave, Albany • 21+IAN SANTILLANO(bandcamp / facebook / instagram)—Born and raised in Hayward, CA, Ian Santillano came onto the local Bay Area music scene in 2019 with the release of his first single “Luv”, a song off of his debut EP called “1856”. Ian would create a following around his must see performances, ranging from huge powerful guitar solos to intimate acoustic vocals that left his most vulnerable self on full display. His debut album, "Intropy", released in 2022, a three-year labor of love consisting of 12 tracks that he wrote, recorded, and produced with the help of his musician and creative community, beautifully showcases Ian’s uniqueness — alternative singer-songwriter that blends deeply personal lyrics with a soul, meets folk, meets rock, meets funk, meets whatever else is inside him sound. Throughout 2023, Ian put out 5 new projects: the gritty single “Pendulum”, the incredibly intimate “End Of The Earf”, the odd-time signature “Equanimity”, the co-written love letter “A New Hue”, and the songwriting masterpiece “Better”, illustrating the dedication Ian has to exploring, developing, and deepening his understanding of self and in turn his art. Ian has also joined a new record label called Bolo Music Group in which he plans on disrupting what it means to be a Filipino-American artist. In 2024, Ian shows no signs of stopping as more projects, shows, and art are on the way.AUGUST LEE STEVENS(website / bandcamp / instagram)—August Lee Stevens is an emerging Bay Area based musician and singer-songwriter with an atmospheric range of Indie Soul and Folk. Her dynamic sound merges the lyrical rawness and simplicity of Folk songs with the melodies and vocals of Neo Soul. A lover of storytelling, she uses music to paint a landscape in which she embodies authentic expression. Her music showcases the strength that comes from vulnerability and through the process of writing hopes to gain a deeper understanding of herself with each written lyric. THE SOAPBOX SALUTE(website / bandcamp / facebook / instagram)—There are so many great artists out there with a powerful message, but fusing musical artistry, songwriting, and social commentary is rare indeed. The Soapbox Salute tries to do just that with its eclectic and rootsy mix of folk, rock, soul, and Americana. The songs brim harmony and prose, driving rhythm, and accents of brass. Aside from the music, the lyrics are deeply thoughtful and compassionate, centering the plight of downtrodden and forgotten people. They boldly denounce injustice in many forms, and even suggest solutions, all without the pitfall of seeming cheesy or insincere. The Soapbox Salute is the brainchild of Timothy Goodspeed, a passionate, long haired, multi instrumentalist, 2nd grade teacher, transplant from Boston. A student of the world, he is an avid traveller, a learner of language, and is fascinated by other cultures, a pupil of spirituality and religion, and a nature lover. His dedication to justice and inclusion is noted by many, none more than by the 7 year olds that call him teacher. —
