This is a new series of concerts, co-presented by Universal Grammar and San Jose Jazz. Held on the second Saturday of each month, the concerts are an extension of the Jazz Beyond Stage at the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest and the forward-thinking programming of Winter Fest, both of which present ground-breaking musicians that are taking jazz in bold new directions.
Whether you call him artist, producer, composer, pianist, performer, DJ, or selecta, titles are of no great importance to Mark de Clive-Lowe, who’s seen his explosive natural gifts blaze across the globe from NZ to the US, Europe and Asia.
A devastating live performer, the Clive-Lowe experience is marked by impromptu studio production created on stage from scratch, using drum machines, keyboards and effects. The end result: live remixes birthed on stage for each and every gig. The piano sets the course, the keyboard is the vehicle, and with the drum machine as the fuel, his skill is underscored by a rare sonic sensibility.
An accomplished musician, Clive-Lowe gained his start in straight-ahead jazz before taking the music far beyond. He’s a first-call collaborator for a wide range of artists, including Jill Scott, Leon Ware (Marvin Gaye/Michael Jackson/Maxwell), Dame Shirley Bassey and a slew of others. Clive-Lowe has gained much praise in the press -- LA Times called him “an uncategorizably gifted talent.” Okayplayer has declared him an “underground phenom,” and Huffington Post wrote Clive-Lowe “delivers his lifetime of journeys to different musical ports in a concise package, seamlessly…transporting not just in genre but in emotion and spirit.”
Clive-Lowe currently curates a resident club night in both Los Angeles and New York: the jazz-meets-electronica experience known as Church. With a constantly rotating cast of resident and guest musicians and vocalists, Church represents the new school jazz movement – paying homage to the past while asserting itself forward in step with global club and beat culture. In addition to Church LA and Church NYC, Church been showcased in Lisbon, Portugal, DC and Oakland, with upcoming events in Holland and Germany.
