the Sonny Moon Swanktet: Standards with Sass and Swagger at The E-spot Lounge

If you’ve seen the jazz octet NUTTY (www.nuttyjazz.com), then you’ve seen front man Sonny Moon and seven other L.A. top cats swingin’ hard on their own jazz interpretations of classic rock songs. Based on the desire to stay up on the American Songbook and satiate fans who want Sonny on a smaller budget, the Sonny Moon Swanktet was born.

Comprised of singer Moon and his rhythm section (piano, bass and drums), the Swanktet is typically a quartet, with an occasional sax and/or vibes to add a little variety to the mix.

The Swanktet opens the book of renown standards we’ve come to love, and also includes favorites from the modern pop/rock roster. Whereas Nutty’s vibe is big band and big sound, with mashups as the key element, the Sonny Moon Swanktet is a tad more traditional and intimate. But it’s the same (albeit abbreviated) cast of characters, same sass and irreverent humor, same musicianship…and same swank....
