Zurich Jazz Orchestra «latin Night – Rompiendo La Rutina» at Moods

We are breaking with the jazz routine and venturing into two of the most important Latin universes this evening: Brazil and Cuba. We start in Brazil, where we will hear soloists from the ZJO playing a wide variety of rhythms such as samba, bossa nova, and frevos. The second set will feature a musical premiere: for the first time, the ZJO will play at the Moods jazz club with Cuban trumpet maestro Juan Munguía, who lives in Spain. Munguía began playing the trumpet at the age of 15 and was recruited to the band Irakere as Arturo Sandoval’s successor at the age of 22. He remained there for 15 years. Irakere was one of the most important Cuban music exports, touring all over the world and leaving its mark in Europe with concerts and albums such as “Misa Negra.” Munguía lived in Switzerland from 1995 to 1997, teaching here and playing in many local bands during this time....

It may well be difficult to sit still on this evening. In addition to rousing salsa pieces, there will certainly be one or two Latin American-influenced arrangements by Ed Partyka. But we are particularly looking forward to the tracks arranged exclusively for the Zurich Jazz Orchestra by Munguía, such as “Rompiendo La Rutina” and his salsa version of Coltrane’s “Moment’s Notice.”
