In 2015, he began working with AXIOM after his label CAMJazz encouraged him to form a new band. Dejan Terzić has consistently succeeded in giving the Axiom Quartet a unique touch. The four virtuosos are always at the service of the music: the focus of all involved remains on the collective. The interplay of intentions and playing styles creates a shared space in which boundless freedom reigns. The basic concepts of most compositions are based on ideas inspired by minimal music in the spirit of Steve Reich to Brandt Brauer Frick. But the lively improvisational development takes the individual pieces in completely different directions, densities, and states—from calm to anger, from the barely audible growth of grass to the power of a volcanic eruption, there is room for every emotion in Axiom’s diverse minimalism.
The latest albums by Dejan Terzić: AXIOM (Silent Dancer and Prometheus), have attracted considerable media attention and received high praise from critics and the press. The band has played numerous tours and festivals at home and abroad, including Jazzdor Berlin, Jazzdor Strasbourg, Jazzycolors Paris, Jazz Festival Bologna, Jazz Fest Genoa, Jazz Fest Sarajevo, and the Jazz Festival Bern.
Despite the thousands of kilometers separating the musicians‘ homes, Axiom is not a one-off project, but a permanent band.
In 2025, they celebrated their 10th anniversary, and now their first live album, Grow, is being released.
From the liner notes:
The Axiom Quartet, in its current lineup, began working together in the summer of 2015, after careful consideration of its members and- with some convincing – my then-record label CamJazz and its producer, Ermanno Basso. Our first CD, Prometheus, was recorded in New York in February 2016.
A lot has happened since that first gathering in 201 5- and it wasn’t truly our first gathering at all, since I had already been working and recording with Chris Speed since 2004. But it was our first meeting as the quartet you hear today. Since then, Axiom has toured extensively across Europe and has released another CD, recorded at the very beginning of the pandemic in Udine, Italy, in March 2020 and released only in 2022. The pandemic set all of us back, I suppose.
Grow is now the third CD by the Axiom Quartet. It was recorded partially live on May 3rd, 2024, during a concert at the beautiful Teatro Reana del Royale in Udine. “Partially live” because two compositions are taken directly from the concert, while the rest were recorded earlier the same day on the same stage. It is a full live set of our music – no overdubs, no edits, no repairs. This is us in real time.
