El Camino College’s Center for the Arts, the Fine Arts Division and Jazz at El Camino College will present the 5th Annual Jazz Festival, a day-long series comprised of musical performances and workshops, on Saturday, May 5, 2018.
Students from both high school and college levels, along with faculty, professional musicians and members of the community, have an opportunity to connect, share and celebrate jazz music. The Afro Peruvian Jazz Orchestra, co-founded by El Camino College Alumnus Anibal Seminario, and saxophonist Lorenzo Ferrero, will be our Featured Artist this year.
The Festival opens at 3:00 p.m., with a concert given by ECC’s Concert Jazz Band, our flagship jazz big band. At 4:00 p.m., ECC Applied Music Faculty Larry Steen (bass) and Mark Massey (piano), will give a clinic about their careers as rhythm section musicians. Starting at 5:00 p.m., Anibal Seminario and Lorenzo Ferrero invite us to discover Afro Peruvian rhythm and jazz in an hour-long clinic session.
At 6:30 p.m., festival attendees are invited to reconvene at the Marsee Auditorium’s South Patio, where ECC Student Jazz Combos will perform during the dinner hour. Tables and chairs will be set up and a variety of food trucks will be present in front of Marsee with choices of food and drinks for purchase.
At 8:00 p.m., the Evening Gala Concert at Marsee Auditorium will begin: the first half will be a Jazz Band Showcase concert featuring high school big bands that were selected through the call-for-bands. The Chris Mello Memorial Scholarship will be presented during the concert to a deserving ECC Student. Following the intermission, the 19-piece Afro Peruvian Jazz Orchestra will perform an exciting set of original compositions.
This event is made possible thanks to generous donations from various organizations. The Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation has made a generous donation of $1,000 towards sponsoring Afro Peruvian Jazz Orchestra, in addition to three travel grants, total of $750, which was awarded to ECC Jazz students – Ashley Crowe (voice), Montana Heater (guitar) and Jade Saffery (sax) to attend the Washington Women in Jazz Festival’s Young Artists Showcase in D.C. The Jazz Education Network also sponsored $500 under the Jazz2U Grant Program.
This event is presented by the Center for the Arts at El Camino College. Daytime events are FREE to all; the evening gala is a ticketed concert at $10 for adults, and a special discounted rate of $5 to high school students with ID at the box office. You may purchase your tickets and parking permit using our ticketing system at centerforthearts.org.
