Jazz (Jazzers Jazzing) by Carl L. Hager
Is Near
Jazz (Jazzers Jazzing by Carl L. Hager focuses attention on “directions in music” since 1968. When Miles Davis was asked the name of the kaleidoscopic 38-minute tune he and his band had just performed for the 600,000 people gathered at the Isle of Wight, he said “call it anything.” Literal-minded discographers have persistently entitled the tune “Call It Anything” ever since. So a secondary purpose for this blog is to give me a place to write about anything I have on my mind, and call it anything.
Duke Ellington admonished people to ignore attempts to limit the definition of jazz, which no matter what else it is, always seems to include improvisation and change.
